ERIC VON FROHLICH
CO-FOUNDER & Owner
Coach

A visionary in the fitness scene, Eric lives in New York City and is a seasoned fitness pioneer and national spokesman in the fields of health, exercise, and wellness.  He is responsible for the growth of two successful NYC fitness brands: Row House NYC and EVF Performance.  Eric and his wife Debra are business partners.  As working parents with 3 children, a dog and a cat, they created Row House with a specific objective—to give people of all different shapes, sizes and abilities, an efficient, high cardio, full body workout in less than an hour - that will build their body up instead of breaking it down.  Before launching Row House in 2014, Eric developed and taught innovative classes at premier clubs in New York City. He operated personal fitness businesses in the Hamptons, Greenwich CT, and Manhattan, and has trained influencers, celebrities, professionals—even kids—and everyone in between.  His clients and students credit his motivational, insightful style with changing their bodies and their lives for the better. Eric has a knack for predicting new fitness trends long before they become big, including spinning and bootcamp. In 2004 he started RoadFit, NYC’s first outdoor boot camp with his wife and fellow fitness entrepreneur, Debra Strougo Frohlich. The moment and the market coincided perfectly, and RoadFit literally took off.  In 2012 Eric and Debra launched their second venture, EVF Performance, a fitness studio and CrossFit box combining the signature class he was teaching at Equinox with his RoadFit program to create the widely popular EVF 360 format. Then, hot on the heels of EVF Eric and Debra launched Row House NYC in 2014. Rowers are justifiably ecstatic to finally have a place where they can go and “all pull together", and as a result Row House has rapidly expanded. Currently there are three locations in Manhattan; Columbus Circle, Chelsea, Upper East Side, and a fourth seasonal pop-up location in Montauk. The DUMBO location will open in 2017.  Eric plays an active role at EVF Performance - in his two NYC CrossFit gyms. Eric spends his day ensuring that quality standards are met through all studios, teaching classes—and identifying ways to continue developing our community.

CO-Founder & CEO

Debra is equal part fitness pro, savvy marketer, businesswoman, and mom.  She is business partner and wife to Eric Von Frohlich.

Graduate of the Goldman Sachs 10KSB program for Row House, Debra runs the business today.  Born with entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for well-being, she has over 15 years experience teaching group fitness at NYC’s premiere gyms including Equinox, Crunch, SCLA and NYSC, and has consulted for numerous national fitness brands, including SELF. In addition to fitness expertise, Debra has the kind of business, sales, and marketing experience that helps start-ups succeed. After college she worked in the start-up environment for a few years, and then took on a new role pioneering sales strategies for a digital publisher. Here she learned the corporate publishing business for 5 years and also supported the Venture Capital arm of the company. This led her to launch the first ever online Fitness community, Fitizens.com—a social community where fitness experts and enthusiasts connect, in 2005. Realizing this idea was ahead of its time, Debra put it on the back burner and began her next career as Director of Sales at NYC & Company, New York City’s official marketing, tourism and partnership organization. Here she combined her passion for digital and love of New York (she was born and raised here), collaborating with businesses and brands small and large like Starwood Hotels, the Empire State Building, Tishman Speyer, and Cirque Du Soleil to attract 50 million visitors a year to NYC and to help businesses of all sizes thrive. Four years ahead of Mayor Bloomberg’s schedule New York City reached this goal and was named the #1 tourist destination for the first time in 20 years. During this time Debra continued to teach classes and immersed herself in the growing fitness scene. In 2005, she met her husband, fitness pioneer Eric Von Frohlich (at a spinning class, surprise, surprise!), and a match in fitness heaven was made. The couple shares a reputation for inspiring, challenging, highly energetic classes. They also share a knack for predicting new fitness trends, and in 2004 Eric hard launched RoadFit, NYC’s first outdoor boot camp. RoadFit was a hit for several years, and then in 2012 Eric and Debra launched their second venture, EVF Performance. EVF combines Eric’s signature Equinox class with his RoadFit program to create the widely popular EVF 360 format. Debra and Eric then set out to pioneer a new indoor rowing workout. Debra wrote the business plan and in 2014 the couple launched the first Row House NYC. Designed to introduce the amazing benefits of the sport of rowing to the fitness community, Debra sees plenty of room for the expanding Row House business.

Row House Birthdate:  I’ve been with the Team since Day 1 in 2014!
Why do you like rowing?  There is such great synergy when a group is synchronized – I can work off the energy that a class is giving and it fuels me to do the same for them.  I love that rowing allows me to use my body in different ways; you can play around with your power and split times to get a great workout, which makes the experience new every time.  And when I’m really in my groove, I can just zone out and row – that’s when I feel strongest.
How do you want your rowers to feel during your class?   I don’t coach classes, but I do play a big role in supporting the Row House Team.   My hope for anyone who comes to our House is to have an experience that meets their personal definition of excellence, and has our standard stamped all over it: welcoming, motivational,  fun and team-oriented.
Outside of Row House – or Rowing- What do you do for fitness?  Yoga is my first and forever love.  I also CrossFit for a good mix of strength and more conditioning.
What is your biggest Rowing accomplishment (on erg or water)?  My lowest on erg split time is 1:26.   I’m still pretty new to rowing, so the next accomplishment will be getting on the water.
Where are you from?  Commonwealth of Dominica in the Southern Caribbean
What defines you?   I’m defined by my integrity.  It’s the one value that continues to guide me through all of my experiences.

SCOTT MARCHFELD
ROW HOUSE coacH

As a former rower from Rollins College and the New York Athletic Club, Scott brings five years of competitive rowing experience to the Row House team. His passion for rowing, and appreciation of the health and fitness benefits that come with it, drew him to Row House as a coach back in September 2014. Scott now leads the Row House Chelsea team as the Studio Manager, integrating the highly-popular indoor rowing exercise to a neighborhood known for its passion of fitness.

Row House Birthdate: September 2014
Why do you like rowing?  In my competitive rowing experience, I enjoyed the thrill of working out with my team mates, and arriving to the boathouse every day to push myself and everyone else.  You're there for each other, showing support through some of the most difficult workouts we faced. But we all do it together, sitting side by side on the ergs. Ready to go the distance for the good of the team.  From a fitness standpoint, I enjoy exploring the myriad of workouts you can create on the machine to maximize your cardio and strength training. I personally enjoy the longer, steady-state endurance rows. However, mixing in a couple short, powerful pieces to supplement my long pieces always proves beneficial.
What do you feel is your strength as Row House instructor? Combining my experience as a competitive rower, my ability to interact with people, and strong music playlist. When all three of these come together, I'm able to bring the most out of every rower (regardless of experience or fitness level).
How do you want you rowers to feel during your class? Excited and confident to embrace the workout and escape their comfort zone. Rowing requires people to push themselves to limits some never dared to reach. I want people to leave my class thinking it was the best workout they received all week, and excited to come back to push themselves harder.
What are 3 adjectives that describe your class? Productive. Motivational. Fun.
Outside of Row House – or Rowing- what do you do for fitness? Long distance running/marathons.
What is your biggest Rowing accomplishment (on erg or water)? Third place finish out of  40+ programs at the 2008 Dad Vail Regatta.  Men's Heavyweight 4 Event.  2 x State Champion
Where are you from? South Setauket, NY
What defines you? Work ethic, friendly, and punctuality.
Do you have anything else to add?  Being an avid marathon runner, I utilize the rowing machine as my primary source of cross training. The key muscle groups that long distance runners train and use the most are the same ones used on the machines.

KELSEY SLAUGHTER
ROW HOUSE coach

Row House Birthdate: June 2015
Why do you like rowing? Being apart of a team! There is simply no better feeling than being on the water and working hard with your team. When everyone is in sync, all you hear are synchronized breaths, oars feathering, and the hum of the boat running through the water--everything just clicks. It translates to the erg, too. Nothing beats that rhythm you get into. Pushing harder and harder and seeing your split drop right in front of you while those meters tick away is pretty great as well!
What do you feel is your strength as Row House instructor?  My rowing experience.  I started rowing when I was 13 (and rowed competitively for almost ten years in high school, college, and outside of that) and was erging years before that. My experience translates into comprehensive technical instruction and drills, and I'm equipped with an arsenal of challenging and versatile erg workouts.
How do you want you rowers to feel during your class?  Strong and confident. Anyone can get a good erg workout, no matter what their fitness level.  FEAR NOTHING, ATTACK EVERYTHING!
What are 3 adjectives that describe your class?  Authentic. Upbeat. Challenging.
Outside of Row House – or Rowing- what do you do for fitness?  I enjoy running, swimming, cardio dance and boxing.
What is your biggest Rowing accomplishment (on erg or water)?  My senior year in high school, my boat medaled at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta (largest scholastic regatta in the country) and our DC, Maryland, and Virginia state championships within two weeks of each other. In college, a boat I was in won the Head of the Schuylkill race, and we rowed the entire 5k distance in a flurry of snow and hail.
Where are you from?  Washington, DC.
What defines you?  My family, and the idea that "the best things in life are not things."
Do you have anything else to add? In college, I rowed for the NCAA Division I University of Pennsylvania Women's Rowing Team. I'm happy to say I managed to row, be involved on campus, and graduate Magna Cum Laude.  **Rowing has been the hardest thing I've ever done, and by far the most rewarding. I've gained so many skills, whether it be self-discipline, time management, teamwork etc. The happiest memories of my life have been from rowing, and I'm hoping everyone who comes to Row House will have some of those moments with us.

BRETTON BEUHLER
ROW HOUSE COACH

Row House birthday: October 2015
Why do you like rowing?  I love rowing because it  can be a mental battle as much as it is physical. You can always row a little bit further and a little bit faster and testing myself is something I'm very passionate about.  It is almost a full body work out and who doesn't love that.
What do you feel is your strength as a Row House coach?  My strength as a coach is making sure that everyone has a great time and while getting a full body work out. I don't come from a rowing background but I do come from a general fitness background. It allows me to relate to many of our clients who aren't rowers themselves. They are there to sweat and enjoy doing it. I make sure we target muscle groups that don't get much attention from the rower even though there aren't many.
How do you want your rowers to feel in class?  I want my rowers to feel the burn! I need them to have that look on there faces like they are working but deep down I know they love it!
What are 3 adjectives that describe your class?  Energetic, tough and revitalizing
Outside of the Row House- What do you do for fitness?  I love doing it all. Olympic lifting, gymnastics, calisthenics, plyometrics, swimming, running and martial arts. You can probably find me at a CrossFit Gym or a regular old YMCA. I really love CrossFit with the community it brings and the high intensity. I also love to test my stamina with long runs and long swims. I also participate in Ju-Jitsu when I can find the time.
What is your biggest Rowing accomplishment?  Doing a full 10,000 meters without stoping while trying to keep a consistent split time of 1:45-1:50. It can be mind numbing knowing you are going to do something for over 30 mins of continual effort but it was so rewarding.
Where are you from?  I'm from Kansas City, KS

Row House Birthdate: November 2015
Why do you like Rowing? Rowing is the perfect workout – it combines cardio and strength building and manages to always make me feel invigorated. You also get as much out of rowing as you put in, which for me is always great motivation to row a little harder or a little farther.
What do you feel is your strength as a Row House coach? I don’t come from a rowing background, which I think makes it easier for me to connect and understand people who may not have as much, if any, experience on indoor rowers. I also am very rhythmic and like to make sure the songs on my playlists match up with activities on the erg.
How do you want your rowers to feel during your class? Any combination of sexy, motivated and accomplished.

Row House Coach

Row House Birthdate:  November 2015
Why do you like rowing?  There is something in it for everyone. I love that unlike some other exercise classes, a workout out on the erg or in a crew shell on the water will only be as difficult as you are willing to make it. The progress you make is dependent on your own dedication and I think that is so motivating. Especially because the ‘total body’ nature of an erg workout yields real, visible results!!
What do you feel is your strength as a row house coach? As someone who went from never rowing to joining the novice crew team in college to eventually rowing varsity, I still remember the terminology and verbal cues that helped me figure out how to push my body. As a coach, I try to use those same descriptive skills and motivation to help people get the most effective workout they can.
How do you want your rowers to feel during your class?  I want people to feel motivated, energized and inspired by their own power. Rowing is not a familiar movement to many people, but once you get it, there is no upper limit to what you can get out of it and I would love to help people realize that their potential is limitless and that I will be there with them every step of the way to help them realize it.
What are three adjectives to describe your class?  Fun, committed, energized
Outside of Row house, or rowing what do you do for fitness?  I grew up a dancer, so anything dance cardio-esque is awesome. I also love to spin, run, and do barre classes to balance everything out.
What is your biggest rowing accomplishment (on erg or water)?  Of all the workouts that I have done on and off the water, I think my proudest moment was pulling (and finishing) my first 2k. Looking back I don’t even remember my final time, but whatever it was it got me into the stroke position of my first novice boat, and it was life changing. I met my best friend in that boat and joined a team of athletes who were committed and driven in way that I had never known previously.
Where are you from?  Originally I’m from Ohio, but now my family is in NY.

Why do you like rowing?  I like rowing because it makes me feel like I am flying across the water, and I love the team aspect. I’m a super competitive person, and the erg gives me immediate feedback on every stroke about how hard I am working which makes me push myself to beat my own splits.
What do you feel is your strength as a Row House coach? My knowledge of the rowing stroke
How do you want your rowers to feel during your class?  I want my rowers to feel super strong and in control. I want them to feel like they can dig deeper and go faster than they thought they could because they’re pushing with everyone else in the class.
What are three adjectives to describe your class and/or your personality?  Spunky, high energy, intense
What is your music style?  What can people expect in class?  My music is a combination of deep house, some Top 40, and of course a few throwbacks. Outside of Row House - or rowing - what do you do for fitness?  I like to be outdoors in any way I can – running, biking, hiking.
What is your biggest rowing accomplishment (on erg or water)?  My biggest rowing accomplishments are competing at the NCAA Championship for four years and being elected captain of the Harvard-Radcliffe rowing team my senior year.
Did you row in school? Where?  Yes - Harvard
Where are you from?  Chicago
What is something goofy about you?  I eat at least three avocados a week!

Why do you like rowing?  The sport of rowing has definitively shaped my personal and physical development into some of the most memorable and self-emerging years of my life.  What I love about rowing is that it not only physically challenges you to push yourself beyond what you THINK is your limit, but it also teaches you how important mental fortitude can be at both the individual and team level.  When you're on the erg, your only competitor is yourself.
What do you feel is your strength as Row House instructor?  Experience and authenticity to the sport.  Training under some of the nation's best, most respected coaches, and rowing with some of the fastest lightweight rowers of my generation have cultivated a huge passion for this sport that I'm really excited to share at Row House.
How do you want your rowers to feel during your class?  Like they're killin' each and every part of the workout!
What is your music style?  EDM/remixes hands down!
What are 3 adjectives that describe your class?  Sweaty, team-driven, party
Outside of Row House – or Rowing- what do you do for fitness?  I try to take every opportunity to go on a run outside and integrate a core/circuit workout.  Also love playing tennis and beach volleyball when it's warm and sunny out.
What is your biggest rowing accomplishment?  Training alongside the Junior National Lightweight team and racing at some of the most national regattas were experiences that I'll never forget.  Also, shedding 14 lbs in 2 days before weigh-ins as a lightweight rower (max 160lbs) in college - it would be a miracle (and quite unhealthy) for that to ever happen again.
Did you row in school?  MIT D1 Lightweight Crew and Pine Crest School
Where are you from?  Miami, FL

Why do you like rowing?  I like rowing because it is the ultimate team sport.  Whether in class on the erg, or in  a boat on the water, there is not a greater feeling than when everyone is in sync.  Rowing makes you feel as though you are a part of something greater than yourself.  It's an amazing workout, and a sport that rewards hard work.  The sport allows you to put your entire body to work and to push both yourself and the people around you.
What do you feel is your strength as Row House instructor?  My greatest strength as a Row House Coach is my rowing experience. Coming from a Division 1 collegiate rowing program, I am no stranger to the erg.  My knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport helps me connect with rowers to motivate them to push harder than they once could have imagined.
How do you want your rowers to feel during your class? Empowered, strong, and excited to be there!
What is your music style?  I like a mix of Top 40, EDM, and hip-hop.

Outside of Row House – or Rowing- what do you do for fitness?  I enjoy running, swimming, spinning, and dancing.
What is your biggest rowing accomplishment? My biggest erging accomplishment would have to be when I set my team's record for the fastest 500 meter sprint at 1:34.1.
Did you row in school? Where? Yes, Boston College
Where are you from?  Northport, NY

Why do you like rowing?   It’s a great low-impact sport!  I started rowing consistently after a knee injury and fell in love after I realized I could still get an incredible workout without over working my joints.  I was a gymnast growing up so my joints deserve a break.  Every time I row, I feel challenged. Rowing as a workout doesn’t become easier, you just become stronger and watch how your new strength and endurance changes your split times and distances.  I feel like I can blast through plateaus with rowing unlike some other exercises I have tried. Still getting new PRs all the time!

What do you feel is your strength as a Row House coach? My energy level!  You’ll never feel a shortage of energy in my class. I really try to focus on empowering my classes to find that extra stored energy and push themselves a little farther than they think they can.

How do you want your rowers to feel during your class?  Empowered, encouraged and energized!

What are three adjectives to describe your class?  High-energy, sweaty, fun!

Outside of Row house, or rowing what do you do for fitness?   I enjoy strength training and HIIT classes. Also anything outdoors.

What is your biggest rowing accomplishment (on erg or water)? My biggest accomplishment was finishing my first 2K.  The feeling of relief and excitement is awesome.

Where are you from?  I've lived all over the place! However, I would probably say Minnesota if I had to choose just one.

KRISTIE LARSON
ROW HOUSE COACH

Row House Birthdate: June 2016
Why do you like rowing? I love the idea of being an integral, individual part of a unit. Nothing makes me happier than hearing flywheels spinning together and watching bodies glide in unison. There is an individual responsibility in rowing that inspires one to work hard without the pressure of the spotlight. I find that really empowering.
What do you feel is your strength as a Row House coach? My empathy game is strong. I'm all about honoring the individual, and with so much experience taking classes at Row House and fitness studios around the city, I know what it's like to be the new kid in class, to be rehabbing from an injury, to want to sit in the back and blend in, to zone in and crush it, to feel weak, to feel like a beast, to want to give up, to secretly race the person next to me. I'm good at reading the energy of the room and using that as my starting point to build an awesome class.
How do you want your rowers to feel during your class? Empowered, sexy, exhausted, and determined to give just a little bit more.
What are three adjectives to describe your class and/or your personality? My class is energetic, technical, and team-based.
What is your music style?  What can people expect in class? I personally listen to a lot of hip hop. It doesn't take long after meeting me to realize I'm a huge Drake fan. I try to sneak at least a Drake feature onto every playlist, but I'm making a conscious effort to put songs on my class list that I don't listen to on a daily basis. I pick songs after I program the class, because I want the music to support the workout. There's something really satisfying about finishing a distance piece at the same time a song ends. And I almost always include a throwback.
Outside of Row House - or rowing - what do you do for fitness? I'm big into HIIT and bodyweight exercise. If it involves burpees, sleds, sandbags, and TRX straps, I'm probably into it. I'm also dipping my toes into weightlifting. It's something I've always wanted to try, but it's taken me a while to build the nerve.
What is your biggest rowing accomplishment (on erg or water)? Probably walking into Row House a newbie and eventually becoming a coach!
Which school did you go to? LSU. Geaux Tigers!
Did you row in school? Nope.
If you rowed, where did you row?  We want it all! I did not row growing up. I actually was an adult before I realized people could go in fresh water without the 100% chance of getting eaten by an alligator. Did I mention I'm from Florida?
Where are you from? Clearwater, FL
What is something goofy about you?  A random fact about you people wouldn’t know? HA, one goofy thing. That's like picking a grain out of a sandbox. My go-to karaoke song is "Look At Me Now" by Chris Brown feat. Lil' Wayne and Busta Rhymes.

What is your music style?  Music to get your heart rate up!  If we can dance to it, we can row to it.

Why do you like rowing?  I love how I can get lost in the ebb and flow of the movements paired with the music. And the sound of the flywheels when everyone rows together! Plus it's a killer workout.
