GETTING TO KNOW YOUR MONITOR
The monitor can be both your best friend, and worst enemy, but knowing and understanding the numbers is half the battle. From top to bottom:
Line 1: TIME
The top line on your monitor is the total running clock of time. It will keep track of the time you are actively moving on the erg.
Line 2: SPLIT
This large, bold number, is how long it will take to row 500 meters. The faster you are going, the lower this number will be, and the sooner you will have completed 500 meters.
Line 3: METERS
In rowing the common measurement is in distance. How far can you row?
Line 4: SPM or STROKES PER MINUTE
This is how many strokes per minute you are averaging. Controlling the stroke rate is one of the fundamentals of rowing. Learning how to move your body on the machine in an efficient and effective way will help regulate the rate, and provide lasting results!
As you become a more experienced rower, you will better understand the correlation between SPLIT and STROKES PER MINUTE.
